“Is explosion more important than bulk for your MMA lifting routine? This used to be a bigger argument in not only MMA but in many other sports as well. While bulk has often been directly related to the concept of strength, such as when considering a strongman or an NFL lineman, it can be counterproductive when an athlete requires speed as well as power to obtain specific results.
About Bulk
Typically bulk muscle is only useful for lifting heavy objects over a certain range of motion. For tests of raw power, bulk strength is very effective. In MMA being a larger and heavier fighter can allow you to bully an opponent to an extent, but usually only in the heavyweight division. Other weight classes have such a small range of weight allowance that it would be almost impossible to bulk up enough over another fighter to be able to use those additional pounds effectively.
